LONDON: The Israel Defense Forces have been accused of shooting and wounding two Palestinian journalists who were covering events in the occupied West Bank.

Photojournalists Louay Samhan and Mahmoud Fawzy were covering a raid in the village of Deir al-Hatab, near the city of Nablus, when the IDF opened fire and injured the two reporters.

A 21-year-old Palestinian, Alaa Zaghal, was killed and four others injured in the incident.

The Committee to Protect Journalists said: “Israeli authorities must conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the killing of two Palestinian journalists and take all necessary precautions to ensure that the Israel Defense Forces do not fire on journalists doing their job.

Sources said Samhan and Fawzy, who worked for PA-funded Palestinian TV, were wearing helmets and blue vests that read “Press” on the front and back when they were shot on Wednesday.

Video of the incident shows the two journalists shot in the hand and leg, respectively, before receiving medical treatment. These facts were confirmed by Israeli reports and a statement from the journalists’ employer.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society confirmed on Thursday that Samhan and Fawzy were treated in hospital and are in stable condition.

According to news reports, at the time of the incident, the IDF was raiding the home of suspected Hamas militant Salman Amran.

It was reported that during the raid, Amran barricaded himself in the house and fought back before being arrested.

In May, the IDF came under fire after Al Jazeera’s Shireen Abu Akleh was shot dead by soldiers while covering an Israeli raid in Jenin.

Israeli officials initially disputed that IDF soldiers fired on Abu Akleh, but later acknowledged that it was likely that their shots resulted in his death.

Justin Shilad, CPJ’s senior Middle East and North Africa researcher, said, “Even after the murder of Shireen Abu Akleh sparked outrage around the world, the Israel Defense Forces again shot at clearly identified journalists as they were doing their job.

“Israeli authorities must immediately investigate this shooting and put in place procedures to ensure journalists are not targets.

Since March, the number of Israeli raids in the West Bank has increased, with reports accusing the IDF of carrying out near-daily raids on Palestinian homes, towns and villages.
