Matthew Williams graffitied Givenchy Mallow shoes

Matthew Williams’ tenure at Givenchy has, for the most part, been as we expected. The sleek black design ruled the roost, aided by the occasional sheen of industrial metal hardware and silver or gold branding. We’re not complaining, he’s one of the best in the business when it comes to this kind of polished brutalism. That said, the brand’s latest Purple sneakers break this mould.

The Givenchy Mallow sneakers were one of Williams’ most memorable outings at Givenchy. Molded slip-ons offer a glimpse into the technical future of luxury sneakers but, so far, we’ve only seen them in monochromatic colorways. Now, with each thumb featuring doodles of Givenchy logos, the design is much more playful.

Let it be a nod to Margiela’s Iconic Replica Trainers which were – according to legend – passed through the workshop as people scribbled phrases and drew logos on them are up for debate. If not, maybe Williams was inspired by Demna’s famous Reebok Instapump Fury remix.

Either way, it’s certainly not the first time we’ve seen a luxury brand bring a silhouette back to life by vandalizing it. In a way, this form of tongue-in-cheek irreverence has become the defining factor in the popularity of top luxury brands in 2022, and Givenchy is just the latest to have a go.

The question is, how would you rock them?
