Jose Mourinho bought new shoes for Afena-Gyan because he arrived in fake sneakers

Speaking about his relationship with Afena-Gyan, Mourinho hilariously shared how he decided to buy the young striker a pair of shoes after he scored his first Serie A goal.

“He was there, he had no contract and he was always coming with fake coaches and all the guys there were having fun with him”, said the Roma boss.

“The moment he came here and the moment he scored a winning goal, I had to say: Felix, it’s time the guys stopped bullying you, so let’s get a good pair of shoes.

“Now he’s signing a contract, he’s going to the Ghana national team and he’s having fun with the other guys because the other guys aren’t going to the World Cup, but he is. So right now, things change.

We will remember that in November, Mourinho had promised to buy new shoes for Afena-Gyan following the Ghanaian’s double against Genoa.

The former Manchester United and Chelsea manager went on to deliver on his promise by gifting the teenager a pair of shoes worth €800.

The Portuguese tactician has since attached himself to Afena-Gyan, whom he promoted from Roma youth to the first team a few months ago.

Meanwhile, Afena-Gyan has now signed a rewarding deal with global sportswear giant PUMA to match his boots.

The highly rated teenager has made a huge impact in Serie A since making his senior debut for Roma last October.

Afena-Gyan’s stock rose further after netting a sensational brace as Jose Mourinho’s side beat Genoa 2-0 in November.

His second goal came thanks to his individual brilliance as he pounced on a loose ball before unleashing a curling effort from 35 yards that left the net bulging.

The goal was announced as the fans’ Goal of the Year during the Socios Year-End Awards in December 2021.

Afena-Gyan was also recently named Serie A’s fastest player for the month of January, beating Lazio striker Ciro Immobile and Juventus star Juan Cuadrado.

His impressive performances at club level earned him a call-up for Ghana’s two-man World Cup qualifier against Nigeria, where he started both games as the Black Stars booked their place in Qatar.
