Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Friday that every student studying in public schools would be provided with one pair of shoes and two pairs of socks, and he approved Rs 132 crore for the purpose.

With no funds provided in the budget and a delay in government decision-making, the Bommai administration has been criticized over the issue of providing shoes and socks.

Regarding the uniforms, the government has already given its approval, they are preparing and will be distributed to the students in a while. Today I approved Rs 132 crore for shoes and socks. We will give them. There is no need to create confusion about this,” Bommai told reporters here.

There are more than 50 lakh students studying in public schools in Karnataka.

The Opposition Congress has slammed the government after BC School Education and Literacy Minister Nagesh allegedly said children are not going to school for shoes and socks.

Earlier in the day, State Congress Speaker DK Shivakumar said he would raise funds for the shoes and socks by begging.
