CINCINNATI, June 3, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Harini Logana 14 year old spelling of San Antonio, TXis the 2022 Scripps National Spelling Bee champion in the competition’s first-ever spell.
Harini (huh-REE-nee) Logan won the prestigious title when she correctly spelled “water hen”, which is defined as “the female black grouse”.
“We activated the spell because it was the best chance to show the extent of the preparation of these spellings,” said Dr J. Michael Durnil, executive director of the Spelling Bee. “Obviously they have demonstrated their deep ability for competition.”
The two spellers each had 90 seconds to spell as many words as they could from a predetermined word list while the other speller was sequestered. Logan correctly spelled 22 out of 26 attempted words – the highest percentage of correctly spelled words – to earn the coveted championship title.
Adam Symsonpresident and chief executive officer of The EW Scripps Company (NASDAQ: SSP), presented him with the championship trophy for the 94th Scripps National Spelling Bee.

This was Logan’s fourth time competing in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. She ranked 31st in 2021, 30th in 2019 and 323rd in 2018.
Logan, an 8th grade student at the Montessori school in San Antoniowas sponsored by Brauntex Performing Arts Theater Association.
The champion receives:
- From Scripps: $50,000 a cash prize, a commemorative medal and the Scripps Cup, the official championship trophy of the Scripps National Spelling Bee;
- From Merriam-Webster: $2,500 cash prizes and reference library from Bee’s dictionary partner;
- From the Encyclopædia Britannica: $400 of reference books, including a set of replicas of the 1768 Encyclopædia Britannica and a three-year subscription to Britannica Online Premium.
Vikram Raju of Aurora, Coloradorepresenting the Denver Post, placed second in the contest and will receive $30,000. He correctly spelled 15 of the 19 words attempted during the spelling.
Vihan Sibal from McGregor, Texasrepresenting Rapoport Holdings, LLC, placed third in the contest and will receive $15,000.
The 94th Scripps National Spelling Bee was held at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. The competition started on Tuesday with 229 spellers. Turn-by-turn results are available at spellingbee.com.
